Before the Portrait Session

Every portrait session begins a little differently.
Some people arrive through a Portrait Refresh session and book directly online. Others reach out for a Signature Session or a more personal creative project. When a session involves more time, wardrobe changes, or location planning, we often begin with a short planning conversation.
These conversations are simple.
But they quietly shape everything that follows.
Here are three ways that small moment of connection can transform the experience in front of the camera.

Step 1
Beginning with Connection
Before any portrait session, it helps to slow down for a moment and talk.
Sometimes that conversation happens through a short Zoom call. Sometimes it happens through email or a quick exchange while scheduling. The goal is simply to understand what has brought someone here.
Is the session for personal portraits, a creative collaboration, or professional images for a brand or website? Are there ideas already forming, or is the client arriving with an open mind?
These early conversations create ease. They allow us to meet each other as people first, not just photographer and client.
Step 2
Clarifying the Direction
When a session includes more time or creative space, we take a few minutes to talk through the shape of the experience.
We may discuss wardrobe ideas, possible locations, or the feeling someone hopes the portraits will carry. Sometimes we talk through the pace of the session or what the day will look like from start to finish.
The purpose isn’t to plan every detail.
It’s simply to give the session a quiet sense of direction so that when the day arrives, there is room to relax into it.
Step 3
Preparing for the Session
After a session is booked, clients receive a short studio guide with simple suggestions for preparing.
Things like choosing clothing that feels natural to move in, arriving rested, and allowing enough time in the day so the session doesn’t feel rushed.
Portrait sessions work best when people arrive feeling present rather than overprepared.
The camera simply meets them there.
Portrait photography isn’t only about the moment the shutter clicks.
Often the experience begins earlier, in the small conversations that allow trust to form and ideas to settle into place.
And sometimes those quiet conversations make all the difference once someone steps in front of the camera.
Thinking about a portrait session?
Portrait Refresh sessions can be booked directly online.
Signature Sessions and creative projects begin with a short conversation to explore the ideas together.
